W3 nervous system Flashcards
What is the structure of the nervous system?
- Central Nervous System
- Peripheral Nervous System

What is the function of the Peripheral Nervous System?
Carries information to and from the central nervous system
What subsystems are in Parasympathetic Nervous System?
- Somatic Nervous System
- Autonomic Nervous system (Sympathetic, Parasympathetic)

Describe the structure & function of the spinal cord
The spinal cord has dorsal and ventral roots.
That carry sensory and motor signals to and from the spinal cord
What is the Sympathetic Nervous System?
Fight or Flight
What is the function of the Parasympathetic Nervous System?
Vegetative functions
Rest and digest
What are the mains parts of the brain?
- Forebrain
- Midbrain
- Hindbrain
What are the 4 components of the Hindbrain?
- Medulla Oblongata
- Cerebellum
- Reticular Formation
- Pons

What is the Medulla Oblongatta function?
Extention of spinal cord that regulates heartbeat, circulation and respiration.

Describe the cerebellum
Involved in movement, learning and sensory discrimination

Describe Reticular Formation
A network of neurons involved in consciousness and arousal

Describe Pons
Links Medulla Oblongata and Cerebellum with upper part of brain stem

Whats 2 functions are involved in the midbrain?
- Tectum
- Tegmentum

Describe the function of Tectum

Involved in orienting to visual and auditory stimuli
Describe Tegmentum

Involved in movement and arousal
What 6 subcatergoies are involved in the forebrain?
- Septal area
- Amygdala
- Hippocampus
- Hypothalamus
- Thalamus
- Basal Ganglia

Describe Septal area
Involved in pleasure, relief from pain, emotionally-significant learning
Describe the Amygdala

Involved in aggression and fear

Describe Hippocampus
Involved in the storage of new memories
Describe Hypothalamus

Helps regulate eating, sleeping, sexual activity

Describe Thalamus

Process incoming sensory information –> transmits it to higher brain areas
Describe Basal Ganglia
Involved in the control of movement (autonomic)
Describe the functions of the cerebral cortex
- Makes symbolic thinking possible
- Understanding
- Personality
What are the 6 lobes of the cerebral cortex?
- Frontal lobe
- Parietal lobe
- Occipital lobe
- Cerebellum
- Temporal lobe
- Limbic

Describe Frontal Lobe
- Abstract thinking
- Planning
- Social skills

Describe Temporal lobe

Important for hearing, language, recognising object, memory
Describe Parietal lobe
- Sensation
- Perception of movement
- Location of objects in space
Describe Occipital lobes
Vision and visual recognition
Name a mild language disorder
Broca’s Aphasia.
Describe Broca’s Aphasia
Comprehension is only mildly impaired, work fluency is deficient
Name a more serious Language disorder
Wernicke’s Aphasia
Describe Wernicke’s Aphasia
Cannot express themselves verbally
What is Prosopagnosia?
Face blindness, unable to recognize the identity. Damage to the Fusiform gyrus
