W2 Flashcards
Media’s social responsibility
(Normative theory)
media must give voice to all and foster community
media as “watchdogs of power”
media must scan the social world and alert people about problems
Media as gatekeepers
Before digital media, journalists and editors controlled the information flow - hence also the image of social reality
Theoretical framework
overview of what is known regarding the subject of research
Sphere of legitimate debate
controversial topics which raise different opinions on the public discourse
Sphere of consensus
topics that are not questioned in the mainstream as it is believed “everyone agrees with them”
Sphere of deviance
an unacceptable / too radical topic journalists will simply keep out of the news as it is just impossible
Social responsibility theory
press has the responsibility to maintain democracy by informing the public and responding to the societies interest and needs
states that media should follow certain standards
solutions:
1) development of public
2) development of professionalism
SR theory lies within libertarian and authoritarian theory as it provides total media freedom but simultaneously external control
Criticism of social responsibility theory
media will focus on all classes and not only on higher classes
as media will be working autonomously but still have some things controlled by the government there’s a balance between freedom and responsibility
Challenges to journalism as an institution
digital era has brought
- increased choice and competition
- rise of platform companies who won a large audience’s attention and ads
New form of gatekeeping
carried out by non journalistic actors that compete against institutionalized news outlets for power over selection and dissemination of info
Positive consequences of internet in public interest
minority groups having an opportunity to raise their opinions and get more attention as there is a shift in the public discourse
communities around the world that share similar perspectives can be created
Negative consequences of internet in public interest
traditional medias SR is weakened as a result of profitability on the part of the media
misrepresentation and stereotypes of minority groups and social movements
