W11- Adoption/ Reporduction Reider Flashcards
Pro-natalism
to have a positive moral view of making more / new people, especially when done nothing to the revenant customers and with to a view towards the future child’s happiness and wellbeing
Anti-natalism
not having a positive moral view of making new people. because people bring bad to the world, and people will experience bad thing, therefore it would be morally wrong to bring a person to existence.
ANPA
(Anti-Natal Pro-Adoption View) = we are obligated not to procreate but instead to satisfy any parenting desires through adoption
R-ANPA
Restricted Anti-Natal Pro-Adoption View = all of those with the means and ability, and who do not have a genuine procreative project, are obligated not to procreate, but to satisfy any parenting desires through adoption
amended version to deal with objections
ANPA Arguments (TR would be in favour to some degree to this model)
- Moral Dangers of Procreating- harms and injustice caused
- Rescue- still parent via adoption
- Asymmetry (Benatar)- one cannot be harmed if they don’t exist, all existence will face at least some harm
- Moral Dangers of Procreating
a) given population + environmental concerns – adding another person to the world contributes to severe moral problems
b) creates a new person who may have to struggle with those problems
•Duty to avoid contributing to systematic harms and injustices
Duty to do our best to ensure that our children do not live bad lives, then it seems plausible that contingent facts about the world entail a duty not to procreate.
- Rescue
- we have an obligation to adopt rather than procreate because there are many many adoptable children who desperately need parenting resources that we want to give.
- Given the situation of orphans globally, those who wish to parent have a prima facie duty to adopt rather than create children
- Asymmetry (Benatar)
It is plausible that there is an ‘asymmetry’ in the reasons related to procreation – morality seems to be on the side of not procreating
• One cannot be harmed if one does not exist
All existence has at least some har
On procreation
•If a woman wants to have 1 child and adopt the rest, then she is acting permissibly and honorably reflectively notes the value and costs of her action + intends to do her best to preserve this great value for herself while still doing the most good that she can
ANPA Objection 1. Demandingness
•Adoption isn’t a possibility for everyone as it is difficult + expensive + most infants are overseas and international adoptions are even more difficult + expensive ANPA doesn’t satisfy parenting desires
ANPA Integrity objection
if it is a woman’s life project to gestate ethically cannot ask her to give that up
Rebuttal 1. restrict ANPA
anyone with the means + ability to negotiate the difficult + expensive adoption process has an obligation to adopt rather than procreate
Rebuttal 2. Morality often requires giving up things that we really want
so if the problem with ANPA is that is commands one to give up their desire to procreate, it can be argued that ‘doing the right thing is hard’
ANPA objection 2. Reasons for children
- New innovations
- Legacy
- Pregnancy process
- Freedom to procreate
Reiders view
ANPA and RANPA incorrect
He agrees arguments for the ANPA hold some weight but does not agree we should be ‘obligated’ not to procreate
the actions are so ‘radically personal’ cant make them obligation- however still can be morally problematic to have kids
