giving advice + guidance on Human Tissue Act (2004)

what is the Human Tissue Act?
A
- living patients must give informed consent to use of their organs/ tissue for particular purposes beyond their diagnosis + treatment
- consent for removal, retention + use of tissue from people who have died - given either by those people in life, or in the event that they die w/out expression given by someone nominated/ close to them

what is fixation
A
- 4% formaldehyde, 10% neutral buffered formalin
- when tissue is chem altered but kept in life like state

A
- organs + tissues arrive in lab + specimen + patient recorded w unique no.

what’s processing step
A
to be able to cut thin slices water must be removed using solvents (takes 15hrs overnight)

A
specimen removed from processors + embedded in mould of molten wax

A
correct orientation of patient tissue to get correct diagnosis

3 micrometre thick sections cut, floated out on warm water + picked onto glass slides
