W1 L1 Darwin legacy W Flashcards
Evolution in the public mind
- an established but contentious idea that probably contributes to explaining our past
-*a helpful, but unverified narrative tool for natural history documentaries
Evolution for biologist
-a unifying conceptual framework, but typically not fully understood by most biologist
-the role of natural selection extensively demonstrate by field and lab exp
-enable us to ask fundamental problems
- abit hard to justify why should we study it
Why should we study evolution
- evolutionary theory crucial for understanding our past
-popular application of evolutionary theory to human behavior is often misplaced with regrettable consequences
*evolutionary theory rarely applied to help manage or resolve biological threats to humanity
Biological diversity across species
About 1,5 million species have been given name
Most diverse are insect with 50% are beetles
Type of Bio diversity within species
Phenotypic diversity : observed variations among individuals in morphology, development or behavioral
Genotyping diversity: the gene the organism inherit ( differences are sometime invisible)
What is evolution
- Any changes in the inherited trait of a population that occurs from one generation to the next
-Helps to explain both the diversity and unity of life
Our future— human selection pressures
- In New York City, 33% cases of TB are caused by strains resistant to one antibiotic
- 3% of new and 7% of recurrent cases of TB are resistant to two or more antibiotics
- survival rate of people infected with TB resistant to multiple drugs is the same as before antibiotics were invented
