what is a vulnerary?
agent that helps tissue heal
used for lacerations, abrasions, ulcers, burns or inflamed or disrupted tissue
many, not all, can be used externally and internally
Calendula officinalis
actions: vulnerary, anti inflammatory (very), diuretic, antiseptic
indications: can be used topically or internally - lacerations, abrasions, excoriations, ulcers (GI, interstitial cystitis, etc.), eczema, rashes
Echinacea spp.
actions: immunomodulator, anti-inflammatory, anti microbial, stimulates leukocytes, inhibits hyaluronidase, enhances phagocytosis, lymphagogue, vulnerary
indications: infection, sepsis, pharyngitis, snake bites, ulcers
eclectics say- stimulant and tonic to circulation
Centella asiatica - Gotu Kola
nutritive with nervine properties, known tropic agent, improves memory and cognition
some of the best studies are on its effect on venous insufficiency, reducing scarring and helps wounds close faster, helps in all phases of wound repair
actions: nutritive, vulnerary, nervine, anti inflammatory, circulatory tonic, alterative, decreases excessive scarring, hepatoprotective
indications: chronic venous insufficiency, memory and cognitive support, anxiety, scleroderma, longevity
Hypericum perforatum- St. John’s Wort
nervine, trophorestorative for nervous system
particularly indicated for burns, topically
actions: anti inflammatory, anti depressant, anti spasmodic, anti viral, astringent, detoxifying, nervine, vulnerary, sedative
indications: wound healing, mild-moderate depression, neuralgia, nerve injury
Stellaria media- Chickweed
cooling and demulcent vulnerary
actions: nutritive, vulnerary, demulcent
indications: lacerations, abrasions, excoriations, ulcers, eczema, rashes, burns
plantago spp.
actions: nutritive, vulnerary, anti inflammatory, demulcent
indications: lacerations, abrasions, excoriations, ulcers, eczema, rashes, burns, used to soothe insect bites and bee and wasp stings, also used to draw out splinters
Matricaria recutita- Chamomile
actions: nervine, anxiolytic, antidepressant, stomachic, vulnerary
indications: nervousnes, impatience, discontent, insomnia, particularly useful in children
Aloe vera
actions: soothing to mucous membranes, vulnerary, antiinflammatory, immunomodulating
indications: peptic ulcers, IBS, inflamed mucous membranes, burns
Arnica spp.
actions: stimulates circulation and macrophage activity, helps resolve edema and ecchymosis
indications: tissue trauma, sprains, strains, bruises, arthritic joints
specific uses and indications: muscular soreness and pain from strains or over exertion
Symphytum officinale- Comfrey
actions: vulnerary, reduces edema
indication: sprains and fractures
contraindications: avoid internally
