Vulnerability Flashcards
What makes areas vulnerable? Increasing risk:
Population growth Urbanisation Environmental degradation Lack of preparedness Very young, or very old population e.g. 60% deaths japan tsumani were over 60. Poor infrastructure
Preparedness
Vulnerability
Education and community preparation programmes raise awareness and teach people how to prepare, evacuate and act
Prepared = government - Japan’s Disaster Prevention Day on 1st September each year and public education.
Non = Corrupt governance - slum housing, ineffectual water supply and endemic poverty.
Location
Vulnerability
Often rural areas are hit less hard than urban areas by the initial impact of the disaster, but isolation and limited access can slow the rescue relief effort
China - Landslides cut rural areas off
Pacific ring of fire - 450 million volcanoes
Philippines - 7000 islands - hard to send relief to all and located on beach - tsunamis
