VSI Indicator Flashcards
What does the VSI do?
Shows how quickly the airplane is climbing or descending in feet per minute
Detects a rate of pressure change .
Has a 8 sec lag
don’t use to maintain level flight ( use altimeter to keep continuous flight level )
Parts inside the VSI
Calibrated leak- air comes in the wafer , the leak calibrates the air the change more slowly. That’s why we can have a 8 sec delay.
Direct static pressure
Diaphragm
Uses aneroid waifers just 1
What if the pitot gets blocked
We can turn on pitot heat if its ice
Can look for bugs or mud
Check tiny drain hole preflight
The VSI wont work
What if the static vents become clogged
The airspeed indicator , altimeter , and vertical speed indicator will become inoperative .
The VSi will show level flight and altimeter will be frozen at the altitude it got blocked at.
The airspeed will act like an altimeter , will show an increase in airspeed in a climb , it will go down with descent.
If the pitot tube and outside static vents become clogged, the….
the altimeter , airspeed indicator , and vertical speed indicator will be affected .
If the static port is blocked you can pull a ?
Static port knob - wont be completely accurate but better than nothing
If you don’t have that , you can crack the glass to create a back up on your VSI
