VSEPR Shapes!!!!! Flashcards
what is E?
number of lone pairs (2 electrons = 1)
what is X??
number of attached atoms directly bonded to central atom (not the same as number of bonds)
E + X = 2
linear!!
E + X = 3
trigonal planar
E + X = 4
tetrahedral
E + X = 5
trigonal bipyramidal
E + X = 6
octahedral
E + X = 7
pentagonal bypyramidal
E = 0, X = 2
linear <3
E = 0, X = 3
trigonal planar
E = 1, X = 2
bent
E = 0, X = 4
tetrahedral
E = 1, X = 3
trigonal pyramidal
E = 2, X = 2
bent
E = 0, X = 5
trigonal bipyramidal
E = 1, X = 4
seesaw!
E = 2, X = 3
T-shaped
E = 3, X = 2
linear
E = 0, X = 6
octahedral
E = 1, X = 5
square based pyramidal
E = 2, X = 4
square planar
E = 0, X = 7
pentagonal bipyramidal
trends - bipyramidal
always have odd number of X, bonded atoms
exceptions; 3 bonds, 2 pairs = T-shaped
3 bonds, no lone pairs = trigonal planar
always odd number bonds on same page, equal number of bonds in and out of the page
trends - linear vs bent
linear if 2 bonds, and either no lone pairs or if lone pairs between the bonds on either side
bend if 2 bonds and lone pairs between on only one side (1 or 2 lone pairs then bent)
predicted bond angles linear
180 degrees
predicted bond angles trigonal planar
120 degrees
predicted bond angles tetrahedral
109.5 degrees
axial
up and down
equatorial
like cut in half from the side, equator like earth
trigonal bipyramidal angles what other has these angles?
ax - equator, 90
axial axial, 180
equator equator 120
same as see saw
t shaped angles
90 degrees ax eq
180 degrees ax ax
do angles between lone pairs and bonds really count
noooo. except wierdly in square based pyramidal says 180 degrees, only 180 would be between axial bond and electrons
is there a model for E = 3, X = 3?
nope idk why
