Chapter 12!!!!! Intro to Polymers - only up to 12.6 Flashcards
polymer
macromolecules (very very very large molecules) composed of many repeating units of smaller molecular weight
theyโre EVERYWHERE
can be natural or synthetic
monomers
the smaller molecules which polymers are composed of
polymerization
joining of monomers to form a polymer
oligomers
chains with just a few repeat units
dimers
polymer w 2 monomer units
degree if polymerization
n, number of repeating monomer units
how are polymers named??
poly in front of the name of monomer
how can polymers be drawn (lewis etc)
draw a few monomers w squiggly lines to denote that there are other atoms connected to end
[single monomer]n where n is number of times monomer repeats
line bond drawings
form of drawing lewis structure for molecules w many carbon
just drawn as lines, carbon atoms at every end and vertice
hydrogen atoms omit
lone pairs omit
determine what the thing actually looks like using knowledge that carbon wants 4 electrons
perspective diagrams with line bond structures
dont necessarily have to show hydrogen atoms, if theres another structure connected to the same carbon it could be helpful
