VPH - Captive Bolts Flashcards
Where do you place the captive bolt in a polled sheep (without horns)?
Captive bolt should be placed at the highest point of the head, and on the midline, and aiming straight down.
Where do you place the captive bolt in sheep with horns?
Captive bolt should be placed on the midline, behind the ridge between horns and aimed towards the base of the tongue (aiming cranially).
Where do you place a penetrative captive bolt in cattle?
Captive bold should be placed in the middle of the forehead, at the crossing point of the two imaginary lines drawn between the eyes and the centre of the base of the opposite horns.
Where do you place a non-penetrative captive bolt in cattle?
Captive bold should be placed 20mm above the position of the penetrative captive bolt.
Note: this is not permitted ruminants over 10kg.
Where do you place the captive bolt in pigs?
Captive bold should be placed 20mm above eye level, on the midline of the forehead, aiming towards the tail.
Note: Pigs are the most difficult to stun with a captive bolt and where possible, stunning electrically or destroyed by a free-bullet humane killer or shotgun is recommended.
Where do you place the captive bolt in horses?
Captive bold should be placed in the middle of the forehead. Draw two imaginary lines from the eyes to the opposite ears and stun approximately 10mm above the point at which they cross.
Where do you place the captive bolt in goats?
Goats should be treated as if they have horns. Captive bold should be placed behind the bony mass on the midline and aimed towards the base of the tongue (cranially).
If the bolt was placed on the bony mass, the energy will be absorbed by the bony mass and may prevent the bolt from penetrating into the brain cavity.
Where do you place the captive bolt in deer?
Captive bold should be placed in the middle of the forehead. Draw two imaginary lines from the eyes to the opposite ears and stun at the cross-section.
In stage, this spot may be found between or in some cases, behind the antlers.
