What is the sociological model
It looks at long term factors such as social class and ethnicity
What is Party ID
Looks at long term factors. Focuses on party loyalty. Suggests people vote the same as their parents.
Example of party ID
It used to be thought that a monkey in a suit could get elected for labour in the west of Scotland. This is no longer the case.
What is rational choice
Focuses on short term factors. Voters are seen as consumers that weigh up all the options and make their decisions based off them.
Example of rational choice
The yes campaign in 2014 didn’t have answers for voters in issues such as currency so it was seen as a risky choice
What is dominant ideology
Argues that the media can shape the public’s opinion

At the 2014 independence referendum the daily record put out ‘the vow’ promising the Scottish people a great number of things if they voted no
