Voluntary and Involuntary Energy Flashcards
What is voluntary energy?
Energy that you are more or less aware of
What does the amount of energy needed for an activity depend on?
- muscle movement
- mass being moved
- the length of time the activity is being performed for
What is involuntary energy?
Energy used to maintain unconscious body activities
What kinds of things require involuntary energy?
- functions of digestive, circularity, endocrine and waste systems
- maintaining muscle tone
- maintaining body temperature of 37 degrees Celsius
- activity of the brain and nerves
What does the amount of energy we need a day depend on?
- age
- body weight/size
- gender
- activity/lifestyle
- climate
- undernourishment
BMR in relation to infants and children?
A high BMR for their size due to their rapid growth and development
BMR in relation to pregnant women?
A higher BMR
BMR in relation to older adults?
A lower BMR due to a decrease in muscle, growth and activity
Body weight/size in relation to BMR?
Skin surface area -
- greater amounts of energy are required to maintain body temperature in small bodies
- a larger body, especially one with a larger fat-free mass, requires more maintenance and thus more energy
BMR in relation to gender?
Men tend to have a higher BMR than women since they tend to have more muscle
Activity/lifestyle in relation to BMR?
- active people require increased energy as they burn it off
- sedentary people need less energy as they do not burn it off
Climate in relation to BMR?
Extremities in temperature (very hot or very cold) will use energy to maintain body temperature
Undernourishment in relation to BMR?
Initially high but then lower
Energy Input in relation to Energy Expenditure?
energy balance = energy input = energy expenditure = maintain weight
How is BMR measured?
When a person is at complete rest, this differs from person to person
