Q

What are volcanoes classified as ?

A

Active - currantly erupting e.g Mount Etna, italy.
Dormant - possibility of erupting e.g mount St Helens USA.
Extinct - extremely unlikely to erupt again e.g Sugar Loaf Co. Wicklow.

what is acidic lava

A

70% silica or more. Sticky and pasty. Lots of gases. Cannot escape easily. Violent eruptions. Destructive plate boundaries

Q

What us pumice

A

Lava is thrown up due to forces of exploding gases and lava can be whipped creating air bubbles.

Q

How does water vapour and torrental rain come into volcanoes/volcanic eruption

A

Subduction zones, Sea water descends towards mantle and heated up. Water vapour rises into atmosphere. It cools and may form torrental rain. This rain may mix with volcanix ash and dust created a mudslide ( larhar)

Q

How do Volcanoes form at destructive plate boundaries (subduction)

A

Heavier plate subducts and begins to melt at depth of 100km.
Water vapour and gases are released and are trapped in magma chamber which forces it to rise upwards.
Pressure builds and then becomes so great it burns through overlying rock and erupts.

Q

Oceanic-Oceanic Collison

A

Two oceanic plates rise above sea level.
Repeated eruptions causes build up of materials and forms Volcanic Island Arcs. e.g japenese island arc

A

chains of volcanic arcs form. e.g The Andes Volcanic arc due to subduction of Nasca plate beneath south american plate

Q

Volcanoes at constuctive boundaries.

A

Two oceanic plates separate from each other.
Fissues form
Magma rises through fissures and erupts onto sea floor.
Gases can escape easily and eruptions are gentle.
Lava comes into contact with sea water it cools and forms basalt.
Basalt build up form a mid ocean ridge e.g Mid Atlantic Ridge.

Q

Volcanoes at hotspots

A

Hotspots are located away from plate boundaries.
Hotspots are hotter areas of earths mantle.
Magma melts through plate to form volcano.
A volcano then moves away from hotspot - extinct.
New volcano forms over hotspot e.g the hawaiian islands

Q

Positive impacts of volcanoes.
Creation of land

A

Formed from volcanic material e.g Iceland (youngest country on earth) Due to North American and Eurasian plates separating and layers of basalt build up from eruptions on Mid Atlantic Rigde

Q

Positive impacts of volcanoes
Volcanic Soil

A

Most fertile in the world.
Nutrient - rich and suitable for intense agriculture.
Slopes of Mount Vesuvius in Italy grow vegetables and fruit.
In Brazil - grows coffees.

17
Q

Positive impacts of Volcanoes
Tourism

A

Iceland’s economy has benefitted by tourism. It is responsible for Icelands income by 42%

18
Q

Positive Impacts of volcanoes
Geothermal Energy

A

Produces clean, renewable energy.
Used to generate electricity and heat homes, businesses and grow crops. e.g Iceland

19
Q

How does geothermal energy work?

A

Magma rises through fissures in crust - generating high temps at shallow depths
Surrounding igneous rock absorbs heat - heating the groundwater.

20
Q

How does Iceland create geothermal energy?

A

Wells are drilled into ground and hot water is pumped out. Then decompresses and turns to steam.
Steam is brought through pipes to power stations where its funelled through turbines to produce energy.

21
Q

How is Geothermal energy safe energy?

A

Produces 30% of Iceland’s electricity and reduces dependance on fossil fuels.
Low cost, renewable and emisson free.
Improves energy secruity and encourages economic growth

22
Q

Negative effects of Volcanoes

A

E.g Mount St helens in may 1980 Causes.
Landslide was triggered after earthquake. Swept out north slope of mountain at 480mph.
Massive ash cloud rose 24km in atmosphere. Most ash fell within 500km of mountain.
Lahars swept down mountain at 250km/h
Pyroclastic flows with temps of 70, rolled out of crater at 1000km/h. Flows covered 10km, burned and destroyed.
57 people killed y pyroclastic flow.
