Faulting Flashcards
What is a normal fault?
A normal fault are created by tension which stretches the crust at constructive boundaries. Stress causes the rock to fracture and break, the hanging wall slides downwards and the footwall is elevated.
What is a reverse fault?
Also known as thrust fault formed when crust is compressed at destructive plates. Pressure - crust fractures, the hanging wall slides upwards on top of footwall forming a scarp
what is a transform fault?
Also known as tear faults, occur when two sections of crust move sideways at transform boundares.
An example of a landform caused by faulting?
Fault line e.g San Andreas Fault, USA. Where the pacific and north american plate meet.
What is a fault?
when the rocks of earth’s crust are pulled apart or compressed by the movement of tectonic plates and crack.
what is a graben or rift valley?
Forms when stretching of the crust causes the land between two parallel faults to sink.
What are fault lines?
Fault lines occur when two plates slide past each other at transform boundaries. Long cracks are visible to the surface e.g San andreas fault,
