Folding Flashcards
Symmetrical Folding
Limbs of both sides are equal
Assymetrical Folding
Both limbs are not equal
Overfold Fold
Pressure is so great that one fold has been partly overturned
Where are do fold mountains form?
Convergent plate boundaries, continental - continental and oceanic - continental plates
What happens when two continental plates collide?
Movement is upwards. Pressure causes layers of sedimentary rock to bend and buckle which creates anticlines and synclines.
What happens when an oceanic and continental plate collide?
The oceanic plate subducts. The edge of continental plate buckles due to pressure, creating fold mountains along coastline.
Example of a fold mountain formed from two continental plates collide.
Indo - Austrailian and Eurasian plate which created the Himilaya Mountains.
Example of a fold mountain formed where an oceanic and continental plates collide
The Nasca and South American plates which created the Andes Mountain.
How does folding influence development of landforms.
350 million years ago red sandstone rock formed. Later covered with limestone rock . 300 million years ago rocks were compressed during Armorican folding. Limestone was eroded from fold anticlines exposing sandstone.
Whats an example of the folding influence development of landforms
MacGilly Cuddy’s Reeks.
3 stages of folding which impacted landscape development.
Caledonian (400 million years ago)
Armorican ( 300 million years ago )
Alpines ( 50 million years ago)
What is a fold ?
A fold is a curve that forms in a sedimentary rock buried in earths crust.
