after 69 years of dormancy the nevado del ruiz erupted, it was considered Colombias worst natural hazard induced disaster. it created the deadliest lahar ever recorded which went down steep slopes at 60km per hour. the summit is covered in large glaciers which melted during the eruption

-the eruption causes torrents of meltwater which washed away part of icelands main perimeter road
-no injuries recorded

-due to the thick deposits of ash it made farming impossible and contaminated the water sources with flouride

it is a british overseas territory and is located in the northern region of the lesser antilles (group of islands in the caribbean) most of these islands are part of an island arc which extends from the greater antilles to south america, most of the volcanos are stratovolcanoes

A

throughout montserrats history, lava domes have been created as a result of vicious silica rich lava building up at the top of volcanoes, when the lava becomes too heavy the domes collapse causing andestic lava and pyroclastic flows

A

-eruptions of ash and dust from the southern chances peak volcano (located in soufriere hills)
-caused an immediate response to occur
-scientists came to monitor the seismic activity, as well as the gases and any other activity around the volcano
-previously scientists thought the volcano was extinct
-in august 1995 the south was evacuated, moving them into churches and halls in the north =
-in april 1996 the entire population had to evacuate the capital of plymouth

-25th june 1997 chances peak erupted and the lava dome collapsed
-this sent 5 million cubic metres of hot rocks and gas down its sides
-south of the island including the capital were covered by the pyroclastic flow
-fires from the pyroclastic flow killed 19 people
-2/3 of houses were flattened by rocks
-airport was completely destroyed
-farmland, vegetation and 3/4 of all other infrastructure were destroyed
-more than half of the 11000 population was evacuated to antigua, usa and uk
