what were the wind speeds

what was the warning for the storm
on the 28th of August the Mayor of New Orleans ordered mandatory evacuation and President George Bush declared a state of emergency
what were the primary impacts
-1242 deaths
-80% of New Orleans was deluged by water
-55,000 homes were too damaged to repair
-110,00 homes were flooded
-power and water supplies were disrupted
what were secondary impacts
-more than 1 million people became refugees
-financial cost of the storm was estimated at $200 million
what were the immediate responses
-They planned for refugees and those affected to evacuate to the superdome which is a large stadium in new orleans. 16000 people were moved here. here there was no sanitation, limited electrical supply, it was patrolled by 500 louisana national guardsmen who carried machine guns, people were given 2 250 ml bottles of water and 2 meals per day. within 5 days 4 died of natural causes, one of overdose and one of suicide.
-part of the superdome roof was ripped away
-$10.5 billion was given in aid by congress
-25,000 people were gathered in houston astrodome and because it took them longer to get there then the conditions were better
what was the rehabilitation
-dozens of countries donated aid in forms of funds and supplies
-canada and mexico deployed troops to the gulf coast to assist with the cleanup
-the US army corps of engineers pumped out the floodwaters from the city, the last of this was removed 43 days after katrina hit

-serious planning efforts occurred 10 weeks after katrina
-there was an extended period of reconstruction from 8-11 years
