Volcanoes Flashcards
Where do volcanoes occur?
Along fault lines and plate boundaries.
What is a volcano?
Opening in earth’s crust through which magma, gases and rock fragments can erupt
Define active volcano
Erupted recently and expected to erupt again
Define dormant volcanoes
“Sleeping” volcano
Has not erupted recently but could erupt again
Define extinct volcanoes
Not expected to erupt again
Define cinder cone and give an example
Ash and solid material erupted
Small cone
Steep slope
E.g. Monte nuovo - Naples, Italy
Define shield volcano and give and example
Lava is gaseous
Few or no explosions
Gentle slope
E.g. Mauna Loa & Kilauea - Hawaii
Define composite/stratovolcanoes and give an example
Lava and ash erupted
Slopes are fairly steep
Very explosive
E.g. Mt Vesuvius - Italy
Define crater
Top of volcano
Define vent/pipe
Where magma comes through
Define magma chamber
Pool of magma connected to pipe
Define cone
Structure of volcano
Define caldera
Collapsed crater
Define fissure
Crack in earth’s surface, where magma can come out
Define cinder
Ash
