Faulting Flashcards
Give four examples of block mountains
Black Forest - Germany
Vosges - France
Mt lofty flinders - Australia
Ruwenzori - East Africa
How does faulting occur?
Pressure is applied to rocks that are too rigid to fold, so the rocks crack
Break along faults/fault lines
Faults are simply cracks in the crust
Types of pressure determines the type of fault
Give five examples of Rift Valley
Great Africa Rift Valley - East Africa Death Valley - USA Rhine valley - Germany Fish river - Namibia Fishhoek - noordhoek (cape peninsula)
Give an example of a transverse fault
San Andreas fault - California
Describe normal faults
Tension forces
Plate moves apart ⬅️➡
️distance gets bigger
Doesn’t cross same layer
Describe reverse faults
Compression forces
Plates meet at subduction zones
Distance gets smaller ➡️⬅️
Cross over same layer
Describe transverse/transform faulting
2 plates slide past each other horizontally
Fault often becomes a valley with river passing through
Earthquakes are common here
Describe fault scarp
Steep slope formed along a fault line when rocks slide up and down
Describe the block mountain
Block of land moves upward, from compressional forces
Reverse fault
Describe the Rift Valley
Block of land moves downwards, from tension forces
Normal fault
Name some ways in which mountains influence people
