Heating Of Atmosphere Flashcards
Describe radiation
Form of waves
In gases
E.g.Terrestrial radiation, solar radiation, fires and heaters
What are the four types of heat transfer?
Radiation
Conduction
Convection
Latent
Describe conduction
Through direct contact, no moving molecules
In solids
E.g. Pot on stove, ground, pot handle
Describe convection?
Movement in particles
In liquids and gases
E.g. Convection currents in mantle, liquid in pot, convection current in atoms
Describe latent heat
Phase change
E.g. Evaporation- heat energy is stored
E.g. Condensation- clouds form, latent energy released
Define electromagnetic spectrum
How solar radiation reaches earth
What are the short waves
Gamma ray
X ray
Ultraviolet
Solar radiation
What are the long waves?
Infrared
Microwave
Radio
Terrestrial radiation
Describe insolation
Heat transferred to atmosphere by convection
Heats up earth through conduction
Energy from sun which reaches the atmosphere
What is solar depletion?
Amount of solar energy that reaches earth
53% lost by: reflection, absorption, scattering
47% reaches surface
How/why/when do we see a rainbow?
Ray of sunlight hits water droplet at a certain angle, different colours that make up the beam is separated.
It is an optical illusion
Why is the sky blue?
Blue and violet are just the right size to be absorbed by nitrogen gase is the Tmoshere, then reflected again
Why is the sky orange/red at sunrise/sunset?
Sun is going to be at low angle therefore more atmosphere to go through. Longer waves get refracted off particles in air e.g. Pollution and dust
Best sunsets: Antarctica, big cities, desert, sea
