Volcanoes Flashcards
What kind of volcano is this?
Composite or stratovolcano
Very tall with steep sides
What kind of volcano is this?
Cinder cone
Steep sides and short
What kind of volcano is this?
Shield
Wide and very tall
Magma
Liquid rock beneath the surface of the Earth
Lava
Liquid rock on the surface of the Earth
Vent
Opening that lava comes out of
Cinder
Small blob of lava ejected from a volcano
Bomb
Large blob of lava ejected from a volcano
Ash
Sand-like particle ejected from a violent eruption.
Falls like snow crushing roofs
Dust
Fine volcanic ash from violent eruptions.
Can enter the atmosphere and block out some of the Sun’s energy, reducing temperatures and the rate of photosynthesis
Silica
Ingredient in magma that makes it thicker
Higher % of silica = thick lava = violoent eruptions
Water
Ingredient in magma found as steam. Steam can lead to higher pressure in the volcano and violent eruptions.
High temperatures
High temperature lava flows quickly and leads to quiet eruptions.
Low temperature lava flows poorly and leads to violent eruptions.
Glacier on a volcano
Glaciers melt prior to eruptions causing deadly mudflows
Wind and volcanos
Ash can be blown by wind to far off areas putting them in jeopardy
