Layers of the Earth Flashcards
Use this to study for your Layers of the Earth Quiz, or your Plate Tectonics Test.
What is the thinnest layer of the Earth?
Crust
What is the outer layer of the Earth?
Crust
What happens to the temperature of the Earth as you progress towards its center?
It increases
What happens to the pressure inside of the Earth as you progress towards its center?
It increases
What happens to the temperature of the Earth as you progress towards its center?
It increases
List the layers of the Earth in order from outside to inside.
Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core
What layers of the Earth are made of rock?
Crust, Mantle
What layers of the Earth are made of metal (iron and nickle)?
Inner Core, Outer Core
What layers of the Earth are solid?
Crust, Inner Core
What layers of the Earth are liquid?
Outer Core
What layers of the Earth are amorphous solids?
Mantle
Why is the crust a solid?
Because it is cooler than its freezing point.
Why is the Mantle an amorphous solid?
Because it is hot enough to be partially molten but pressure prevents it from fully melting.
Why is the outer core a liquid?
Because it is hot enough to melt the metal that makes up the outer core.
Why is the inner core a solid?
Even though it is hot enough to melt, pressure prevent it from melting.
