Volcanoes Flashcards
Secondary effects
Mud flows, more death and damage Fires, started by lava, which spread Psychological damage Homeless Food and water shortage Unemployment Acid rain
Primary effects
Infrastructure destroyed by lava and pyroclastic flows and falling ash
People and animals killed or injured suffocated by CO2
Crops and water supplies are damaged by ash
How is it caused
Oceanic plate is sub ducted into the mantle where It is melted
Pool of magma forms
Magma rises to fill cracks
The magma erupts onto the surface forming a volcano
Where are they formed
At destructive and constructive plate boundaries
Some form over hot parts of the mantle ( hot spots ) e.g. Hawaii
Most found on pacific ring of fire
Why do they form along plate boundaries
Where magma rises to form volcanoes
Advantages of living near a volcano
Soil is fertile because of minerals
Tourists
Geothermal energy used to generate electricity
How can the effects be reduced
Predict - seismometers, records seismic activity
Satellites - detects heat change
Protect - stronger buildings, no flat roofs
Prepare - educate, emergency kits, evac zone, money
