Volcanoes Flashcards
Where do volcanoes occur?
volcanoes occur where plates move together (constructing and destructive)
what is the name of the name given to the volcanoes in the Pacific?
The Pacific Ring Of Fire
What is the Volcano case study?
Montserrat
Where is Montserrat situated?
a small country in the west Indies
What is the name of the volcano ?
Sourfriere Hills
What caused Montserrat to erupt?
Montserrat is situated on a destructive plate boundary between the Caribbean plate and the Atlantic plate. These two plates are slowly moving together forcing the denser oceanic plate under the continental plate.
How can the volcano be monitored? 6.
-Seismic Network
-Infrared
-Photography
-Tiltmetres
-GPS network
-Monitoring SO2 Flux
How is seismic network used to monitor the volcano?
Seismometers monitor ground noises and shaking. This helps as we know when a volcano is erupting.
How is Infrared used to monitor the volcano?
measures the heat of the magma and is easier to see through cloud. It shows the the hottest points which are most likely to collapse or erupt.
How is photography used to monitor the volcano?
Taking photos shows a change. Where the most change has taken place that shows a concern
How is tiltmetres used to monitor the volcano?
shows the slope change, If it is getting steeper it is more likely to erupt.
How is GPS Network used to monitor the volcano?
shows a change in height and shape in the volcano. When that increases there is a high chance the volcano will erupt.
How is monitoring the SO2 flux used to monitor the volcano?
the more gas there is and the more concentrated it is, the more likely it is to erupt.
What are 4 effects on people from the eruption?
- rescue workers were recovering the bodies of 7 people.
-amimals were abandoned by owners - the old town of Plymouth was destroyed by the pyroclastic flow
- smoke, steam and ash billowed from the mountain and people struggled to breath.
What are 4 effects on the landscape from the Volcano?
-crops failed
-houses were set ablaze by the hot ash
-10ft of ash rained down all over the island
- airport was buried by the pyroclastic flow
