Earthquakes Flashcards
What are the four types of plate boundaries?
-Destructive
-Constructive
-Conservative
-Collision
At what plates do earthquakes occur?
all of them
What is an earthquake?
an earthquake is the sudden shaking of the earth caused by a sudden movement of rock beneath the surface.
What causes an earthquake?
It is caused by the release of pressure as two tectonic plates move against eachother.
What is the FOCUS of an earthquake?
the point in the earths crust where the earthquake originates.
What is the EPICENTRE of an earthquake?
the point on the earths surface immediately above the focus.
What is meant by seismic waves?
the energy from an earthquake that travels through the earth
What are the two types of seismic waves?
- pressure waves
- body waves
What measures earthquakes?
The magnitude scale.
How do we predict earthquakes? 5
-laser beams
-tilt metres
-pattern of previous earthquakes
-seismometers
-amount of strain measured along a fault line.
How are laser beams used to predict earthquakes?
They can detect plate movements along a fault line
How are tilt metres used to predict earthquakes?
They can detect plate movements along a fault line
How does the pattern of previous earthquakes help to predict future earthquakes?
They are studied. And this can predict when an earthquake MIGHT happen in years to come.
How are seismometers used to predict earthquakes?
they pick up vibrations in the earths crust.
What is meant by ‘short term aid’?
It is the rapid response to a disaster.
