Q

What are the types of plate boundaries and formation?

A

Divergent-Plates moving away from one another and can lead to volcanoes and earthquakes.
Convergent-Two tectonic plates moving towards one another usually one is oceanic and the other is continental as the oceanic crust is submerged. This can lead to earthquakes and volcanoes.
Transform-Two tectonic plates moving alongside one another which can only lead to earthquakes but not volcanoes.

Q

What are the lava types?

A

Basaltic- Occurs from Gentle sided, shield/dome volcanoes. Basic lava and contains basalt. It is fluid lava meaning low viscosity, two places this lava is found is the Hawaiian Islands and Iceland.
Andesitic-Occurs on steep sided and cone volcanoes, The lava contains basalt and silica, it flows through pyroclastic flows and lahars. The lava is viscous and can be found in the Philippines and Mount Pinatubo.
Rhyolitic- Occurs on steep sided volcanoes where the lava has lots of silica and some basalt. The lava is very viscous and can be found at Mount ST Helens USA 1980.

Q

What are the volcano types?

A

Basic shield- Occurs at divergent, the lava is basaltic.
Acid dome- Occurs on convergent plate boundaries, the lava is viscous
Composite- Divergent plate boundary, the lava is andesitic and rhyolitic.
Ash and cinder- Occurs at convergent plate boundary, the lava is basaltic.
Caldera- Doesn’t occur at plate boundary’s, the lava is basaltic.

Q

What landforms occur at Convergent plate boundaries?

A

When both plates are continental, it can lead to fold mountains but when it’s one continental and one oceanic is can cause a volcano and no matter what plates it can cause an earthquake. Some landforms can be ocean tranches, ocean ridges and island arcs.

Q

Where are volcanoes found?

A

Volcanoes are found at tectonic plate boundaries most of the time however they can also occur away from plate boundaries. The boundary with the most volcanoes is at the Pacific ring of fire which is between the pacific plate and the Eurasian, North American and south American plates creating a horseshoe of volcanoes.
