Scales to measure hazards Flashcards
Richter scale
A numerical scale for expressing the magnitude of an earthquake. The higher the number the higher the magnitude of the event. It is measured by the largest waves amplitude.
Mercalli scale
A twelve point scale for expressing the local intensity of an earthquake, ranging from I to XII. It is measure by the effects of the earthquake.
Moment magnitude index
A measure of an earthquakes magnitude based on its seismic moment. It is measured by the product of the distance a fault moved because of the earthquake.
Volcanic explosivity index
Also known as VEI this is a scale that describes the size of explosive volcanic eruptions based on the magnitude and intensity.
Saffir Simpson scale
A measurement of a hurricane. It is measured by the hurricanes maximum sustained wind speed.
