Volcanoes Flashcards
Name the parts of a volcano
ash cloud, crater, cone, secondary cone, layers of hardened rock and ash, steam, side vent, lava flow, volcanic bombs, main vent, magma chamber
3 stages of volcanoes
Active,
Dormant,
Extinct
Explain extinct volcanoes
Volcanoes that are no longer active, erupted thousands of years ago with little possible chance of erupting again
Explain dormant volcanoes
Ones that have not erupted recently yet may erupt in the future
Explain active volcanoes
Ones that have erupted recently with a chance of erupting again
Name the three types of volcanic eruptions (this time its the material that surfaces and the shape they form)
C - composite
C - cinder cone
S - shield
Describe composite eruptions
These produce stiff rapidly solidifying lava forming a steep cone
Describe cinder cone eruptions
Throws out ash to build up a flatter dome called a cinder cone
Describe a shield eruption
One that has lava flowing over the crater rim to form a broad, low “dome”
Hazards of a volcanic eruption
Ash Noise Lava Volcanic bombs Pyroclastic flow
What is the volcanic explosivity index
index that measures how much material has erupted from the volcano
