Volcano Management Flashcards
Why is seismic activity monitored ?
If earthquakes are migrating toward surface could suggest rising magma fracturing rocks
Why is ground deformation monitored ?
Tilt meters and laser measures can detect minute changes in slope and and distance between points suggesting that riding magma is displacing above ground
Why monitor gas emissions
Ground-based airborne satellite detectors measure these
If gases pas through lakes it changes colour
Gas emissions can happen prior to eruption
Why monitor thermal changes
Increasing discharge from hot springs and dead vegetation can be visible signs
Detectors such as satellites register temperature
Why monitor Lahars ?
Observations of Lahars can allow short term earnings
How can a volcanic eruption ion be modified ?
Control lava flow,
7 billion litres of sea water was sprayed on lava in Vestmannaeyjar in Iceland 1973
Divert lava flows with trenches
Both methods only worked possibly cause eruption ceased
How can you modify human vulnerability of volcanic events
