Volcanic Eruption Flashcards
These are natural openings in the earth’s surface where molten rocks, smoke, gases, and ashes are ejected.
Volcano
A funnel-shaped depression at the top of a volcano formed as a result of volcanic eruption
Crater
A volcanic crate that is formed when a part of the wall of the crater collapses following an explosive eruption
Caldera
Underground compartment of magma deposits
Magma chamber
Molten rocks that tries to escape upward through open spaces between plates toward the cooler areas on the crust
Magma
It is a volcano that has had at least one eruption during the past 10,000 years.
Active Volcano
How many active volcanoes in the Philippines?
24 Active Volcanoes
An active volcano that is not erupting again but supposed to erupt again
Inactive/Dormant Volcano
Has not had an eruption for atleast 10,000 years and is not expected to erupt again in a comparable time scale of the future
Extinct Volcanoes
Fixed places with the mantle or oceanic lithosphere
Hot Spots
Where rocks melt in order to generate magma
Hot Spots
How are shield volcanoes formed
Shield volcanoes are formed by hotspots located in the oceanic lithosphere
These are constructed on deep ocean floor and be build high enough to rise above sea level as volcanic islands
Hot Spots
What’s the process of Volcanic Eruption
- Magma continuously heated below the earth’s surface as it goes up
- As it rises, pressure increases inside the volcano due to trapped gas bubbles within it causing it to swell
- Pressure exceeds, the strength of overlying rocks, fracturing occurs resulting in further drop in confining pressure.
- Enhance formation of gas bubbles
a type of volcanic eruption where lava flows from the vent in a relatively gentle, low level eruption; it is so named because it is characteristic of Hawaiian volcanoes.
HAWAIIAN ERUPTION
the least violent type, with highly fluid or runny lava flowing out a volcano’s vents. It leads to the formation of shield volcanoes.
HAWAIIAN ERUPTION
Violent, featuring
continuous ejection of
magma and gas.
Strombolian Eruption
It results in the formation of volcanic bombs and cinder cones.
Strombolian Eruption
a thick, viscous magma flows around the vent as solid lava dust are ejected.
Vulcanian Eruption
accompanied by a dense cloud of ash and gases that rise high into the atmosphere
Vulcanian Eruption
caused by the buildup of viscous magma and dissolved gas.
It is accompanied by fast- flowing pyroclastic debris and lahars.
Plinian Eruption
Is the most violent and explosive type of eruption.
Plinian Eruption
