Voice Evaluation Flashcards
Advantages and disadvantages of mirror laryngoscopy
Advantages:
-Quick overview of laryngeal anatomy and physiology
-Prognostic for either rigid or flexible laryngoscopy
Disadvantages:
-Poorly tolerated by some patients
-Can only assess sustained vowels and not connected speech or singing
-Alters typical laryngeal behavior
Advantages and disadvantages of rigid (oral) laryngoscopy
Advantages -Good lighting/photography -Good magnification/videography Disadvantages -Poorly tolerated by some patients -Can only assess sustained vowels, not connected speech --Cannot assess entire vocal tract -Alters typical laryngeal behavior
Advantages and disadvantages of flexible (nasal) laryngoscopy
Advantages
-Well tolerated by almost all
-Minimal alteration of laryngeal behavior
-Assesses connected speech and entire vocal tract
Disadvantages
-Inferior optics/magnification to rigid laryngoscopy
What is the laryngologists primary role?
Identify and manage conditions that interfere with normal voice production
What is the SLPs role?
Evaluate and facilitate voice production given the known medical status of the patient, make recommendations for further testing
How is hearing/vision related to voice/voice disorders?
A hearing loss could lead to not having auditory feedback of the voice, speaking in an unnatural pitch, loudness, glottal attack, etc.
A vision loss could result in lack of awareness of where others are, leading to inaccurate loudness
What are some big important questions to answer in a case history?
Description of problem and cause, onset and duration of the problem, variability of the problem, description of vocal demands, previous therapy,
