Vodka and the Law.
EU
• Raw materials: any agricultural material may be used.
• Distillation: must be distilled to at least 96% abv such that the flavour of the raw materials used and by-products formed in fermentation are selectively reduced. Methanol less than 10g/hL.
• Post distillation: charcoal filtration may be used. Must be bottled at more than 37.5% abv.
• Labelling terms: if not produced from potatoes or cereals, must state the raw material on label.
USA
• Raw materials: any agricultural material may be used.
• Distillation: must be distilled to at least 95% abv so as to be without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color.
• Post distillation: charcoal filtration may be used, and 2g/L sugar may be added. Must be bottled at more than 40% abv.
