Citizen
A legally recognised member of a country.
Immigrants
People who come here from other countries.
Quota
A specific number of immigrants allowed to enter the country per year.
Aliens
Permanent residents of the United States who are still citizens of another country.
Native-Born
Someone who was born in the United States.
Naturalization
The legal process by which an alien may become a citizen.
Refugees
People who are trying to escape dangers in their home countries.
14th Amendment
Granted full citizenship to African Americans
Equal protection under the law, no state can take ‘life, liberty, or property’ without due process
15th Amendment
Gave African American men the right to vote
Cannot be denied because of race or color, only African American men affected, states still passed laws to prevent voting
19th Amendment
Gave all women the right to vote
Before this amendment the states had started gradually allowing it
26th Amendment
Lowered voting age from 21 to 18
This was because they felt if people are allowed to enter the military at 18, they should be allowed to vote at 18 as well.
Draft
Requires men of certain ages to serve in the military if needed
Jury Duty
Citizens called to serve in jury duty, have to take time off work and paid little; sacrifice because everyone is entitled to a jury by peers
Treason
The act of betraying your country; Constitution makes it punishable by death
Oath of Allegiance
End of becoming citizen, swears loyalty to U.S and Constitution
