Supreme Court
The highest court in the country
Court of Appeals
Court above trial court. They can review a verdict and make a decision.
District Court
Another name for a trial court
Federal Courts
Hear cases involving federal laws. the constitution or disputes between citizens of different states.
State courts
Involving state laws or state’s constitution, disagreements between citizens of the states.
Trial court
Also called a District Court, the first court to hear a case
Evidence
Can be almost anything, shown to a jury to prove their story is true.
Criminal Case
Relating to a crime
Civil Case
Decides which version of the story is correct
Jury Trial
Group of twelve people listen to evidence and decide who wins
Bench Trial
There is no jury so the judge give a verdict.
Verdict
A decision that decides who wins the case
Appellate courts
The courts able trial courts; they look over the verdict for mistakes and can either affirm, reverse, or remand it.
Appeal
To ask an appellate court to review a case
Affirm
To agree with the trial courts decision
