Neuroglycopenia
a medical term that refers to a shortage of glucose (glycopenia) in the brain, usually due to hypoglycemia. Glycopenia affects the function of neurons, and alters brain function and behavior. Prolonged or recurrent neuroglycopenia can result in loss of consciousness, damage to the brain, and eventual death.
Ataxia
Uncontrolled muscular movements
Whipple’s Triad
Whipple’s triad is a collection of three criteria that suggest a patient’s symptoms result from hypoglycemia which may indicate insulinoma. Used to separate “true hypoglycemia” (in which a low glucose can be demonstrated) from a variety of other conditions (e.g., idiopathic postprandial syndrome) in which symptoms suggestive of hypoglycemia occur but low glucose levels cannot be demonstrated. The triad is stated in various versions, but the essential conditions are:
Symptoms known/ likely due to hypoglycemia
A low BGL measured at the time of the symptoms
Relief of symptoms when the glucose is raised to normal
Secretagogue
A secretagogue is a substance that causes another substance to be secreted.
Postprandial
After eating. Preprandial is before eating.
