Bezold effect
The effect of colors on one another. Changing one single color alters the entire design
Abstraction
An image derived from visual reality, but is distilled or transformed
Containment
To unify by placing elements within a frame, boundary or container
Content
The emotional and /or intellectual meaning or message of an artwork
Continuity
To unify through the fluid movement from one element to another; this can be either implied or actual connections
Dynamic brush strokes
Brushstrokes which preserve the distinctness of separate marks
Emphasis by placement
Attention is gained by placement within the design, determined by location and proximity to the center and edges
Emphasis with color
Using color to draw attention to a crucial area in a composition
Formalism
A set of ideas, reaching prominence in the 20th century, founded on the philosophy that what was universal to all artworks were formal elements such as color, composition, and shape
Frieze
Any painted or sculpted band that encircles an object or building
Geometric abstraction
Abstraction involving forms (usually with hard edges) derived directly or indirectly from geometry or mathematics.
Illuminated manuscripts
A luxurious handmade book with painted illustrations and decorations containing silver or gold leaf
Luminosity
The condition of light when a glow seems to be generated from within an object or surface, in contrast to a non-luminous surface, which appears lit from an outside source.
Non-objective shape
Pure forms without direct reference to the physical, visual reality
Organic abstraction
A looser style of abstraction involving personal expression of the artist’s sensibility and exploration of visual form.
