Analogous color harmony
A color scheme based on hues that are adjacent on a color wheel.
Achromatic neutral
Neutral derived from the mixture of Black and White
Blocking-in
The process of starting a painting by painting a simplified structure of the larger shapes of the composition
Broken color
An effect when paint is applied lightly, with a dry brush effect, over a dried layer of paint, allowing some of the underneath color to show through
Chroma (intensity)
The purity, strength or intensity of a Color
Chromatic neutral
Neutral derived from the mixture of various hues
Contour
The perceived edges of any three-dimensional form
Contrast
The degree of difference between compositional parts or between one image and another
Ellipse
A closed curve having the shape of an elongated circle visible when true circles are seen from an oblique angle

Figure/positive shape
The principle form or forms as distinguished from the background
Gestalt
A theory of visual perception that emphasizes the importance of holistic composition. According to this theory, grouping, containment, repetition, proximity, continuity, and closure are essential aspects of visual unity. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts
Ground
The surface of a two-dimensional design that acts as the background
Grouping
This is the first step in the Gestalt process. We perceptually group visual elements by location, orientation, shape and color
Hue
The name of a color (such as red or yellow) that distinguishes it from others and assigns it a position in the visual spectrum.

A color scheme based on variations in a single hue.
Negative space
Unoccupied areas or empty space surrounding objects or figures in a composition
Picture plane
The two-dimensional surface on which shapes are organized into a composition
Pigment
Finely powdered coloring material used in the manufacture of artist’ paints an drawing materials
Proportion
The relative size of visual elements within an image
Representational painting
A painting that depicts recognizable subject matter. Also a painting that shows aspects of the way things look, or could look, in the physical world
Shade
A hue mixed with black
Shape
An area enclosed by a line or another contrasting area
Tint
A hue mixed with white
