Asymmetrical balance
Equal visual weight on either side of the pictorial axis using dissimilar objects and placements
Approximate Symmetry
Similar element placements are mirrored on either side of a central axis.
Chiaroscuro
The modeling of form by means of light and dark values
Closure
To unify through the mind of the viewer. This refers to the viewer’s mind completing an image, to put together a visual puzzle
Complimentary color balance
A color scheme using hues that oppose one another on a color wheel. When paired in a composition, they create contrast; when mixed, they create a wide range of chromatic neutrals
Composition
The arrangement of visual elements such as line, spaces, tones, and colors in a work of art
Emphasis/Focal Point
Special attention given to some aspect of a composition to increase its prominence
Emphasis through contrast
Attention is gained through a combination of opposing forces/elements, Contrasts in Scale, Shape, and Color
Figure-ground shift
The condition when negative shapes in the background of a painting vie with one or more positive shapes in the foreground for the viewer’s attention
Foreground
In 2-dimensional drawings or paintings, those forms or figures that appear nearest to the viewer
Near-complimentary color balance
A color scheme using a hue plus one hue neighbor of its compliment on the color wheel
Pattern
The deliberate repetition of a visual element over and over
Pictorial axis
The central, vertical dividing line in a composition
Repitition
To unify by using the same visual element or effect over and over
Scale
The size of a form when compared with our own human size
