Agnosia
A= without, gnosis= knowledge
Inability to name common objects because the connection between visual interpretation of objects and the words that name them have been damaged
Apraxia
A= without, praxis= movement
Inability to know how to use a common object
Receptive aphasia
Inability to understand (receive) speech, but ability to speak clearly
Indicates damage to temporal lobe
Expressive aphasia
Inability to speak (express oneself) clearly, but ability to understand speech
Indicates damage to frontal lobe
Global aphasia
Combination of expressive and receptive aphasia. Inability to follow commands or answer questions
Aniscoria
Unequal pupils
Sign of increased ICP
Nystagmus
Involuntary, rhythmic movement of the eyes
Can be caused by seizure, vertigo, MS
Hemiparesis
One sided weakness
Hemiplegia
One sided paralysis
Ataxia
Changes in a person’s ability to perform coordinated motions like walking
Often occurs in Parkinson disease
Myoclonus
Involuntary contraction of the muscles that is rapid and jerky in nature
Dystonia
Part of the body contracts and remains contracted
Intension tremors
Tremors that occur when person tries to reach out and grab an object; often increases as they get closer to the object
Common in MS
Postural tremors
Occur when the body is forced to maintain the same position for a long period of time
Tonic activity
Boyd is very rigid and contracted; body will often shake from the intensity of the contraction
