What is truthfulness?
○ Genuineness, the opposite of hypocrisy
○ Seeking truth rather than the comfortable lie ○ In this way, we can consider adherents of religions other than our own as “truthful”
people
What is atheism?
there is no God
What is agnosticism?
Undecided about the existence of god
What is humanism?
Human reason triumphs over faith.
What is secular?
Not religious or unrelated to religion.
What is secularization?
To move away from religion.
What is strong atheism?
A belief system that asserts the non-existence of god(s).
What is weak atheism?
A belief system that denies there is adequate evidence to justify belief in the existence of god(s).
What is agnostic atheism?
I don’t know if there is a god, but I
don’t think there is.
What is agnostic theism?
I don’t know if there is a god, but I believe that there could be one (Something-ism).
What is apathetic agnosticism?
I don’t know. I don’t care.
What is somethingism?
An unspecified belief in a higher force.
What is telos?
the end goal
What does “secular” mean?
Worldly, separate from God, separation of religion & state
What is objectivism?
believe that there is meaning beyond the individual (morality or creativity, for example).
What is subjectivism?
believe that meaning is relative to the subject and therefore derives from an individual’s desires, ends and choices.
What is nihilism?
assumes that there is no meaning to life.
What is accepting love?
Affirms the being of the child (I love you for you, no matter what).
What is transforming love?
Seeks the well-being of the child (if your child is sick, you seek a cure).
What is militant fundamentalism?
(ISIS) The religion is seen as being at odds with culture and/or other metanarratives and must be protected or preserved and culture must be converted/redeemed or resisted.
What is escape?
The religion is seen as being at odds with culture and/or other metanarratives, which are viewed as polluting influences that should be avoided
What is syncretism?
The religion is blended with other metanarratives and/or the dominant culture. This is sometimes expressed in pluralistic beliefs.
What is adapt?
The religion had definitive aspects that stand apart from other metanarratives and/or the dominant culture, but may be interpreted in a way that speaks to a specific context.
What is patriarchalism?
● This position represents the view that men are in some sense superior to women and should rule over them in every area of life.
● Proponents of this view would point to biological and psychological differences
What is complementarianism?
● Sometimes called “soft patriarchy” or
“patriarchy light.”
● Men and women have different but
complementary roles and responsibilities in marriage, family, life and religious leadership
What is egalitarianism/feminism?
● All human persons are created equal in God’s sight and are therefore are called to all roles and ministries w/o regard to class, gender or race.
● They believe that equal-yet-different, as taught by complementarians, is a contradiction in terms.
● Egalitarians believe that men and women share mutual submission and responsibility in both marriage and the church.
