Q

What is the responsibility challenge to transhumanism?

A

The real problem with genetic enhancements is the explosion, not erosion of responsibility. As we attribute less to chance & more to choice the greater burden we bear for the talents we have & they way we perform

Q

What is the solidarity challenge to transhumanism?

A

If our genetic endowments are gifts, rather than achievements for which we can claim credit, it’s a mistake & a conceit to assume that we’re entitled to the full measure of the bounty they reap. We have the obligation to share this bounty with the less fortunate.

Q

What is Sandel’s problem of hyperagency?

A

a Promethean aspiration to remake nature, including human nature, to serve our purposes and satisfy our desires.
And what the drive to mastery misses and may even destroy is an appreciation of the gifted character of human powers and achievements” (Sandel).

Q

What is “openness to the unbidden”?

A

Parental love is not contingent… We choose our friends and spouses… But we do not choose our children. Their qualities are unpredictable and even the most conscientious parents cannot be held wholly responsible for the kind of children they have. That is why parenthood, more than other human relationships teaches … an ‘openness to the unbidden’”
