What are the five pillars of Islam?
Shahadah Salah(t) Sawm Zakah(t) Hajj
What is Shahadah?
Declaration that there is no god except God,
and Muhammad is God’s Messenger
What is Salah(t)?
Ritual prayer (observed five times a day)
What is Sawm?
Fasting and self-control during the month of Ramadan (6/5–7/5 in 2016)
What is Zakah(t)?
Giving 2.5% of one’s savings to the poor and needy
What is Hajj?
Pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if he/she is able (Dhu al-Hijjah)
What does Jihad mean?
struggle
What are the ways that Jihad is viewed in Islamic communities?
○ Jihad against one’s self (Jihad al-Nafs),
the struggle against temptation
○ Jihad of the tongue (Jihad al-Lisan),
trying to speak truth and teach Islam
○ Jihad of the hand (Jihad al-Yad),
trying to take action against injustice
○ Jihad of the sword (Jihad al-Sayf), namely combat, or defensive struggle.
What was the concept of ummah?
● Status in society at the time of Muhammad was ascribed through family lineage and social relationships.
● Women, orphans, and slaves, were particularly vulnerable.
Ummah controversy
● The creation of a new tribe, the ummah (literally “family”),based on religious adherence rather than birth was a radical concept that upset traditional systems for social organization.
What kind of knowledge do Sufi Muslim’s seek?
mystical knowledge
What is sufism?
branch of Islam that seeks mystical knowledge of & relationship with Allah
Why do Dervish whirl?
to experience intoxication (in all white-purity)
What are some beliefs or practices that distinguish Sufis from other types of Muslims?
They do NOT place emphasis on 5 pillars Self-denial (food, sleep, talk) Discipleship Meditation "intoxication" & ecstatic experience (art, drugs, alcohol, dancing)
