Tier 3 Words
Words used in school that are specific to a certain subject or field. These are words that you might find in a textbook on a certain topic or in the glossary of an informational book.
Denotative Meaning
a literal, dictionary meaning of a word
Matthew Effect
stronger readers tend to get better and better at what they do well, while weaker readers keep having trouble with what they don’t do well. This makes the gap between weak and strong readers bigger.
Word Consciousness
way of teaching vocabulary that gets students interested in new and strange words
Reading Vocabulary
words a reader can recognize while reading a text
Limited Vocabulary
smaller or more restricted bank of words than is typical
Student says “that one” instead of referring to item by specific name.
Tier 1 Words
Common words that are already familiar to students when they enter school. These words do not need to be taught in a classroom setting.
Tier 2 Words
There are some academic words that students will use often and that are used in more than one subject. Many of these words are process words that are often used in tests.
Semantic Mapping
a form of scaffolding which helps students to develop connections among words
Utility (in vocabulary)
the frequency with which a word will be encountered
Analogies
are used to compare two things that are usually thought of as different but have something in common
hand is to glove as foot is to sock
Connotation
the implied meaning of a word; the feeling a word conveys
Listening Vocabulary
words a listener can recognize when heard
