Developmental Delay
The condition of a child being less developed mentally or physically than is normal for its age
Mental Retardation (MR)
Condition diagnosed before age 18, usually in infancy or prior to birth that includes below-average general intellectual function and a lack of the skills necessary for daily living
Mild Mental Retardation
IQ scores range from 50-75
Can acquire academic skills up to the grade 6 level
Fairly self-sufficient and may be able to live independently with help
Moderate Mental Retardation
IQ scores ranging from 35-55
Can carry out work and self-care tasks with moderate supervision
Acquire communication skills and can live in group home
Severe Mental Retardation
IQ score of 20-40
May mater very basic self-care skills and some communication skills
Able to live in group home
Profound Mental Retardation
IQ scores under 20
May develop basic self-care and communication with support/training
Need high level of structure and supervision
Borderline intelligence
A person has below average cognitive ability (IQ 71-84) but the deficit is not as severe as intellectual disability (below 70)
Neurotypical
Not displaying or characterized by autistic or other neurologically atypical patterns of thought or behavior
Low average intelligence
IQ between 80-89

A condition marked by impaired muscle coordination and/other disabilities, typically caused by damage to the brain before birth

Bayley Scales of Infant Development
Standard series of measurements used primarily to assess to motor, behavioural, and cognitive development of infants and toddlers age 0-3
Early intervention
A system of coordinated services that promotes the child’s age appropriate growth and development and supports families during the critical early years
