First person narrator
The storyteller
. In a book or movie when someone uses “I” “me””we”
Ex. In twilight Bella says “call me Bella”
Flashback
An old memory
Ex. In a story where a girls afraid of heights there is a flashback to a time she fell off the top of the playground as a young child
Foreshadowing
A warning or incident of a future event
Sometimes a future event is mentioned earlier in the story like a comment about meeting between characters
Irony
The expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite typically for humourous or emphatic affect
Examples:
- A fire station burns down
- a marriage counsellor files for divorce
- the police station gets robbed
- a traffic cop gets his license is suspended because of unpaid parking tickets
- a pilot has a fear of heights
Dramatic irony
When a character thinks they know something is going to happen for an opposite happens
Ex A woman thinks her boyfriend is acting strangely because she’s about to propose but the audience knows that he’s planning to run away with another woman intensifying emotions
Situational irony
Irony involving a situation in which actions have been having affect that is the opposite from what was intended so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected
Ex. A character stepping out into a hurricane and saying “what nice weather we’re having!” situational irony occurs when the actual result of situation is totally different from what you’d expect result to be
