Foreshadowing

A

A warning or incident of a future event

Sometimes a future event is mentioned earlier in the story like a comment about meeting between characters

Irony

A

The expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite typically for humourous or emphatic affect

Examples:

  • A fire station burns down
  • a marriage counsellor files for divorce
  • the police station gets robbed
  • a traffic cop gets his license is suspended because of unpaid parking tickets
  • a pilot has a fear of heights

Dramatic irony

A

When a character thinks they know something is going to happen for an opposite happens

Ex A woman thinks her boyfriend is acting strangely because she’s about to propose but the audience knows that he’s planning to run away with another woman intensifying emotions

Situational irony

A

Irony involving a situation in which actions have been having affect that is the opposite from what was intended so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected

Ex. A character stepping out into a hurricane and saying “what nice weather we’re having!” situational irony occurs when the actual result of situation is totally different from what you’d expect result to be
