vocab quiz 2 (3-5) Flashcards
concave
curvature that extends inward.. like a bowl.
convex
curvature that extends outward..like a balls surface
plasma membrane
seperates the cell contents/cytoplasm from the extracellular or interstitial fluid. lipid bilayer.
cytoplasm
cell contents. liquids are known as cytosol..and the structures are known as organelles.
cell nucleus
control center for cellular operations
perpindicular
2 lines that meet at a 90 degree angle.
free surface
along epithelial tissues that is exposed to air or fluid. opposite of basement membrane.
basement membrane
made of protein fibers that hold epithelial cells to each other and the body. it lies between the epithelium and the underlying connective tissues.extracellular material secreted by epithelial cells
keratin
hard protein material found in the epidermis, hair and nails that helps prevent water loss from the surface of the body.
lumen
Cross section of the gut. The lumen is the space in the middle. In biology, a lumen is the inside space of a tubular structure, such as an artery or intestine.
stratified
provides a greater degree of protection and has more layers of cells. on surfaces used often like mouth and anus.
pseudo
single layer but appears to have 2 or more layers. also add 2D and 3D shapes here
matrix
extracellular protein fibers and ground substance form the matrix. most of the volume of connective tissues.
collagen
long, straight, and unbranched. strong but flexible and are the most common fibers in connective tissue.
elastin
branched and wavy and after stretch will return to original shape.
