Sound Inventory
-An assessment and measuring tool.
-Can be used by Speech and Language Therapists but has also been designed as an accessible method for teachers to gather information on an individual child’s speech sound production.
Phonetics
The study of how humans produce and perceive sounds.
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
A system of phonetic notation that uses symbols to represent the sounds of human speech.
General American
American English accent spoken by most Americans. It’s also known as Standard American, Broadcast English, and Network English.
Frequency
The number of times a repeating event occurs in a given period of time. It is measured in hertz (Hz)
Vocal Tract
The area from the nose and the nasal cavity down to the vocal cords deep in the throat.

A location along the vocal tract where its production occurs.
Bilabial
An adjective that refers to a speech sound that is made using both lips.
Alveolar
Small air sacs in the lungs that contain alveoli, where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
Labiodentals
Consonants that are formed by the lower lip and upper teeth.
Dental
A consonant articulated with the tongue against the upper teeth.
inter-dental
Formed by placing the tip of the tongue between the upper and lower front teeth.
Palato-Alveolar
An adjective in phonetics that describes a sound where the tongue tip or blade approaches the alveolar ridge and the main body of the tongue is near the hard palate.
Palatal
Phonetic term for a consonant sound that is produced by raising the front of the tongue toward or against the hard palate.
