What is it called where the upper and lower eyelids meet?
Canthus. Can be medial or lateral.
What is a granuloma?
A small area of inflammation (macrophages= histiocytes) in tissue, usually in the lungs but can appear anywhere. Usually d/t infection.
What are histiocytes?
Macrophages. They are considered chronic and form granulomas.
What is red skin called?
Erythema
Hyperplasia vs hypertrophy
Hyperplasia= ↑ in NUMBER of cells (think cells all over the "place") Hypertrophy= ↑ in SIZE of cells (think cell won the trophy for biggest muscles)
What is it called when the iris adheres to either the cornea or the lens?
Synechia.
Anterior synechia= iris adhered to cornea.
Posterior synechia= iris adhered to lens.
What is it called when a pt can’t urinate?
Anura
What is a small/contracted pupil called?
Miosis
What is an enlarged pupil called?
Mydriasis

MyDriasis= “D” for “Dilate”
What is it called when your pt’s upper eyelid is drooping?
Ptosis
What are the terms for an eyeball that is anteriorly displaced? Posteriorly?
Anterior= exopthalmos "ex for exiting" Posterior= enopthalmos "en for "in"
What is another name for the third eyelid?
Nictitating membrane
