Point of View
The angle of considering things which shows the reader the opinion or feelings of individuals involved in a story, poem, or essay.
1st person point of view
When a narrative uses the pronouns “I” and “we.”
3rd person limited point of view
When a narrative uses the pronouns “he”, “she”, “it”, “they”, or names. The speaker is a character in the story who only knows what they directly observe or are told.
3rd person omniscient point of view
When a narrative uses the pronouns “he”, “she”, “it”, “they”, or names. The speaker is an all-knowing narrator who describes the thoughts and feelings of characters in the story, not just events.
Character
A person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story that drives the plot forward
Protagonist
Called the “good guy” or Hero but does not need to be good. The plot centers around this character. Not all stories have a hero
Antagonist
Called the “bad guy” or villain but doesn’t need to be bad. Involved in the conflict. Opposes/competes with the Protagonist. Not all stories have a villain
Minor/Secondary character
Characters that play a lesser role in the story. The main events of the plot and the central conflict do not revolve around these characters.
Setting
the place where the story takes place, time (era, year, time of day), environment (ocean, island, desert), climate (rainy, foggy, hot), culture (dialect, customs, clothing)
Suspense
A state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. The interest and excitement that grows throughout the story. Author raises questions to engage the reader. Leads up to climax
